Independent Oil & Gas Producers
Harbour Energy: Company Profile

Harbour Energy plc is one of the UK's largest independent oil and gas companies and has evolved from a private-equity-backed acquisition vehicle into a major international upstream energy producer. The company was founded in 2014 by EIG Global Energy Partners, with the objective of creating a new global independent oil and gas business through acquisitions. Its growth strategy has subsequently been built around acquiring producing assets, improving their performance and extending their productive lives.
A major milestone came in 2017, when Harbour acquired Chrysaor Holdings and, through it, a portfolio of UK North Sea assets from Shell for approximately $3 billion. In 2019, it acquired ConocoPhillips' UK North Sea business for $2.7 billion, becoming the UK's largest oil and gas producer at that time. In 2021, Chrysaor completed a reverse takeover of Premier Oil, creating the publicly listed Harbour Energy plc and providing a platform for international expansion.
Harbour's most transformational expansion came in September 2024, when it completed the acquisition of Wintershall Dea's upstream portfolio. The transaction significantly increased the company's scale, reserves and geographical diversification, adding substantial interests in Norway, Germany, Argentina, Mexico and North Africa.
The impact was particularly evident in 2025. Harbour reported record production of 474,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, an 84% increase from 2024, while unit operating costs fell by approximately 22% to $12.8 per barrel of oil equivalent. Its portfolio also includes major growth opportunities in Mexico and Argentina alongside its established UK North Sea operations.
