Chris Cox is a highly experienced British energy executive and the Chief Executive Officer of Serica Energy plc, one of the UK's prominent independent North Sea oil and gas producers. Appointed CEO in July 2024, Cox brings more than 40 years of experience in the global upstream oil and gas industry, having held senior leadership positions with major energy companies and independent producers. His career spans exploration and production, operations, major projects, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and multi-country business management.

Education and Early Career 

​

Cox holds a BSc in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London, providing the technical foundation for a career that has combined engineering expertise with senior commercial and corporate leadership. 

Over the course of his career, Cox has worked with several major international energy companies, including Chevron, Amerada Hess and BG Group. His experience across these organisations gave him exposure to different stages of the upstream value chain and international operating environments.

Senior Leadership Career 

​

Cox subsequently moved into senior executive positions at Centrica, where he became Managing Director of Centrica's Exploration & Production business. He later became Chief Executive Officer of Spirit Energy, a major European exploration and production company. These roles involved leading complex, multi-asset and multi-country businesses and managing mature producing assets alongside development and growth opportunities.

His career also includes service as Chairman of Kellas Midstream, a position he held from 2015 to 2020. Kellas operates energy infrastructure, giving Cox additional experience beyond upstream production and broadening his understanding of the wider energy value chain.

In 2023, Cox became Interim Chief Executive Officer of Capricorn Energy, adding further experience at the listed-company level. He has also served as a non-executive director of publicly listed and private-equity-backed companies, including Nostrum Oil & Gas. 

 

Leadership at Serica Energy

Cox joined Serica's Board in July 2024 and assumed the CEO position the same month. At Serica, his mandate is centred on executing strategy, improving performance and guiding the company's next phase of growth. His extensive experience managing mature assets is particularly relevant to Serica's North Sea portfolio and its focus on extending field lives, optimising production and pursuing selective growth opportunities.

Recognition and Industry Leadership

In December 2025, Cox was appointed to the Board of Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), the leading trade association representing the UK's offshore energy sector. The appointment recognised his more than four decades of industry experience and his background in both executive and non-executive leadership.
